The building.

Designed by architect Edwin Summerhayes and built in 1920, the hall was home to the Independent Order of the Rechabite’s Perth outpost for decades before passing through a series of lives – a Commonwealth Bank branch, artist studios, a photographers’ shop, a bike shop, a barber, a gallery, an independent theatre, and a 90s squat that birthed Western Australia’s biggest cult grunge band, Beavarloop.

Built in the 1920s by the Independent Order of Rechabites – a global temperance movement dedicated to fighting the evils of alcohol. Restored in 2019 by people with different ideas. A century of mishaps in between.

Badminton championships, cat parades, artist studios, a 90s grunge squat. Each layer kept intact. The stains earned their place. Today The Rechabite is home to four floors of food, drink, music, and mischief – wrapped around one of Perth’s most iconic live performance spaces.
