For pianist and composer Matthew Sheens, an accident inspired a new composition, which tonight has its Perth debut.
Written in the Dark is a through-composed piece written while Sheens was convalescing after a bike crash that left him with a broken leg and hand.
Comprised of 10 sections, this piece explores many different musical terrains, while sustaining compositional ideas throughout. While the work can be described as a technically demanding weird dream, there is still huge scope for improvisation by the entire quartet.
Featuring some of Australia's finest musicians - Hugh Stuckey (guitar), Sam Anning (bass) and Tim Firth (drums), this performance ties up Sheens’ Australian album release tour.
Matthew Sheens is a genre-bending jazz pianist and composer. He is listed as one of Fred Hersch’s “pianists you should know” and described in The Australian as “an outstanding pianist, stoked full of creative ideas and limitless technique… totally innovative and luminous”.
