Ghosts Between Streams is an interdisciplinary work by 2022 Freedman Fellow, composer and trumpeter Tom Avgenicos. It blends chamber music, contemporary jazz and electronics to explore the power struggle between nature and urbanisation. With an overarching environmental concern, the work captures the notion of solastalgia – the sadness felt at the loss or change of a beloved place in nature.
Inspired by Avgenicos’ daily walks through Stringybark Creek Reserve on Cammeraygal Country (Sydney), Ghosts Between Streams paints a vivid picture of the reserve's rich flora and fauna, now threatened by urban development. This is reflected in the work through an exploration of contrasts: light and dark, consonance and dissonance, smooth and jagged, acoustic and electronic.
Ghosts is performed by Avgenicos’ long-standing quartet, Delay 45, featuring Roshan Kumarage (piano), Dave Quinn (bass) and Ashley Stoneham (drums). Together they create a rich tapestry of sounds and textures that are woven together into an epic work that promises to take audiences on a spellbinding journey brimming with emotional power and resonance.
